BUFFALOES
AND
Joh 6:9 There is a lad here, which hath five barley loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?
10 And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.
11 And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would.
Sometime ago we were having devotions with our grandchildren who had spent the night with us. I chose as the scripture John 6 and the story of Jesus feeding of the five thousand. Several times I had to quite the grandchildren ages 5, 3 and 2. I warned them to listen well for I was going to ask them questions when I was through. Certain that they had not listened well, I asked the five year old, “What did Jesus feed the multitude?” With out hesitation she replied, “Buffalo.” I shamed her for not paying attention especially, since I had read very expressively. Earnestly my granddaughter replied, “But Pawpaw, you did say that Jesus fed them buffalo!” I read the scripture again to them, “…five barley loaves…” and then I realized she had heard buffalo instead of barley loaves. We all had a good laugh and a wonderful time teaching our grandchildren this blessed story of our wonderful Savior.
Time is never wasted when invested in the Word of God and in the lives of children. Though young perhaps, they hear and remember. Recently the same granddaughter spent the night with us, now six years old. When choosing a scripture for devotions she said, “Pawpaw, read that place where I thought Jesus fed the multitude, buffalo!” Once again, I read the amazing story of the Savior who can meet every need in a little girl’s life. It is wonderful to know that in my life growing up, that not one day was missed in reading the Bible and praying in our home. I must say, I believe that was the greatest influence in my life.
Lord Jesus, thank you for the influence your Word has been in my life for good. Help me to always be faithful in sharing your Word with others whether young or old. Amen
